Temporomandibular Joint Injuries during whiplash

Whiplash injuries occur due to differential accelerations in the human body. Neck injuries predominate, but a considerable body of clinical evidence suggesting a close relationship between whiplash and Temporo-Mandibular Joint (TMJ) disorders has also accumulated. However, the potential injury mechanisms are poorly understood. This book presents the development of sled-testing of a physical model of the head, neck and mandible designed to simulate in vivo behaviour in a low velocity rear end collision. The sled test results are combined with tensile tests on cadaveric TMJ specimens to show that excessive levels of mouth opening do not occur during low velocity whiplash conditions. Active bracing of the jaw muscles prevents mouth opening. A two-dimensional computational model was also developed, showing good correspondence to the experimental tests. A parametric analysis using the model indicated that normal geometric variations are unlikely to significantly alter the predicted results from the experimental testing. The results from this work conflict with the inertial injury theory for the TMJ during whiplash.

In this work a useful tool to the design of vehicles is developed. In particular several methodologies are combined to reduce the design time. The solver employs an immersed boundary method to create the mesh automatically. A second order scheme with a correction for the pressure is adopted for the wall boundary condition. A local refinement method is developed to increase accuracy in interesting areas. The refinement can be based on geometric or fluid dynamic criterion. In case of discontinuities, an adaptive refinement is employed to better capture the phenomenon. Finally, a multigrid technique is adopted to speed up the time to convergence. Several simulations are proposed: subsonic flows over solids of revolution and wings, a transonic flow over the ONERA M6 wing. As a more complex application, an analysis of a rear engine aircraft is proposed. In particular a comparison with a configuration without engines and a comparison with the results obtained by means of a body-fitted RANS solver are shown.

An attempt was made to design and develop a floating poultry house suitable for flood affected area. A model of floating house was built under the present study was the carrying capacity of 740 kg loads with sufficient freeboard of 30% excluding the self weights of the supporting empty steel drums in water. It has been found that the model poultry house having floor area of 35 square ft supported by four empty airtight steel drums that are locally available can be used safely to rear about 60 hens for laying purpose. The house can be arrange with four steps vertical caging of compact system for rearing hens during flood. The value of metacentric height of the constructed house was found to be positive (+1.5 ft) indicating its stability at floating condition. The angular displacement of the house due to wind action was also calculated. The analysis shows that the floating structure would be stable up to the wind speed of about 140 km/hr. The cost- benefit ratio of the house was found to be 1.22 indicating its economic feasibility.

Parallel parking is a difficult manoeuvre for drivers. The aim of this research was to develop a system to perform this manoeuvre autonomously, requiring no driver input at all.The stages of this development were analysis of the kinematics of vehicles, the design of a simulator and prototype robot to demonstrate parking and the development of parking algorithms to achieve reverse-parallel parking at or above the standard of the learner drivers logbook.Equations were derived to describe the motion of a vehicle. These were tested in a flexible Matlab simulation.A remote control car was modified to be controlled via command line inputs or uploaded control law. A complete and successful set of laws has been documented and used to demonstrate the prototype robot in a parking scenario.The final algorithms were able to successfully park the vehicle utilising only an ultrasonic sensor and encoders on the rear wheels. Calculations and parking are performed in real-time, taking substantially less time than a human driver would. This was only possible due to development of a highly optimised transform to analyse the sensor data.
