Before Osama bin Laden was killed by U.S. troops in Pakistan on May 2, 2011, the shadowy leader of al-Qaeda had all but disappeared from public consciousness. Largely depicted as a historical figure, he was viewed by the media, government, and public as the mastermind behind 9/11, but no longer relevant to the world it created. Yet to view the man through this lens, Michael Scheuer argues, only contributes to a widespread denial of his ultimate significance andpower. In this newly updated paperback edition, Scheuer, the first head of the CIA's bin Laden Unit, draws from a wealth of interviews, speeches, and previously un-translated documents to challenge the complacency of the West's perception of Osama bin Laden. Exploring bin Laden's evolution from a peaceful Saudi dissident to America's Most Wanted and shedding light on his development as a theologian, media manipulator, and military commander, Scheuer produces a closely reasoned, authoritativeportrait of America's most determined enemy. Discrediting prevailing claims that depict bin Laden as irrelevant or unimportant, Scheuer's much-needed corrective shows a figure of remarkable leadership skills, strategic genius, and considerable rhetorical abilities who was significantly underestimated bythe West.In light of the success of the U.S. Special Forces mission that brought down bin Laden in Pakistan, Scheuer expands his argument to consider the political landscape that bin Laden left behind and the dark legacy that survives him. Despite the reactions of the media and American public to bin Laden's death and the renewed depictions of him as a simplistic, one-dimensional foe, Scheuer argues that the jihadist leader was truly a complex and formidable enemy of the West, and that his influenceand ideology take on a heightened relevance in the wake of his death. "Steeped in detailed knowledge of the Saudi jihadist. It is a needed corrective to most of the airy generalizations about bin Laden and his followers."-The Financial Times"A highly readable and jargon-free book...a serious and non-ideological treatment and analysis of bin Laden's thinking.... One of the most detailed biographical sketches of bin Laden available in the West."-Library Journal"Scheuer was long the dean of U.S. government analysts of Osama bin Laden.... In this volume he has distilled his decade and half of thinkingto produce a portrait of bin Laden that is authoritative."-Peter Bergen, author of The Longest War and Holy War, Inc.

Since the initiative works for global analysis of linear differential equations by G.G. Stokes and B. Riemann in 1857, the Airy function and the Gauss hypergeometric function became the most important and the greatest practical special functions, which have a variety of applications to mathematical science, physics and engineering. The cffcctivity of these functions is essentially due to their 'behavior in the large' . For instance, the Airy function plays a basic role in the asymptotic analysis of many functions arising as solutions of differential equations in several problems of applied math ematics. In case of the employment of its behavior, one should always pay attention to the Stokes phenomenon. On the other hand, as is well-known, the Gauss hypergeometric function arises in all fields of mathematics, e.g., in number theory, in the theory of groups and in analysis itself. It is not too much to say that all power series are special or extended cases of the hypergeometric series. For the full use of its properties, one needs connection formulas or contiguous relations.

Using the potent psychological symbolism of Beowulf and other material, Dr. Goodwyn uses modern depth psychology to look at how the heathen mindset deals with primordial human problems such as rage, depression, trauma, anxiety, grief and mortality itself. Using an in-depth, scholarly analysis of the world of Beowulf and other texts combined with clinical observations, Dr. Goodwyn provides a uniquely heathen perspective on some of life's most vexing challenges. Here we find how the heathen spirit counters suffering not with airy analysis, wishful fantasy or dogmatic assertions, but with story, kin, craft, connection, honor, and most of all courage.

Mathematica is today's most advanced technical computing system. It features a rich programming environment, two-and three-dimensional graphics capabilities and hundreds of sophisticated, powerful programming and mathematical functions using state-of-the-art algorithms. Combined with a user-friendly interface, and a complete mathematical typesetting system, Mathematica offers an intuitive easy-to-handle environment of great power and utility. 'The Mathematica GuideBook for Symbolics' (code and text fully tailored for Mathematica 5.1) deals with Mathematica's symbolic mathematical capabilities. Structural and mathematical operations on single and systems of polynomials are fundamental to many symbolic calculations and they are covered in considerable detail. The solution of equations and differential equations, as well as the classical calculus operations (differentiation, integration, summation, series expansion, limits) are exhaustively treated. Generalized functions and their uses are discussed. In addition, this volume discusses and employs the classical orthogonal polynomials and special functions of mathematical physics. To demonstrate the symbolic mathematics power, a large variety of problems from mathematics and phyics are discussed. TOC:Introduction and Orientation.- I. Symbolic computations: Remarks.- Manipulation of polynomials.- Manipulations of rational functions of polynomials.- Manipulations of trigonometric expressions.- Systems of linear and nonlinear equations.- Classical analysis.- Differential equations.- Integral transforms and generalized functions.- Three applications.- Overview.- II Classical orthogonal polynomials: Remarks.- General properties of orthogonal polynomials.- Hermite polynomials.- Jacobi polynomials.- Gegenbauer polynomials.- Laguerre polynomials.- Legendre polynomials.- Chebyshev polynomials T.- Chebyshev polynomials U.- Relationships among the orthogonal polynomials.- Overview.- III Classical special functions: Remarks/Introduction.- Gamma, beta, and polygamma functions.- Error functions and Fresnel integrals.- Sine, cosine, exponential, and logarithmic integral functions.- Bessel and airy functions.- Legendre functions.- Hypergeometric functions.- Elliptic integrals.- Elliptic functions.- ProductLog function.- Mathieu functions.- Additional special functions.- Solution of quintics with hypergeometric functions.- Overview.- Index.
