Seasonally dry tropical forests are worldwide recognized as important ecosystems for biodiversity conservation. Increasing agricultural activities (e.g., slash-and-burn agriculture) leads to a heterogeneous landscape matrix, and as ecological succession takes over in abandoned fields, plant and animal communities endure shifts in species richness and composition. This book presents the analysis on plant and Lepidoptera (caterpillar) communities and their species turnover along forest succession and along a gradient from dry to humid seasonal forests in the Southern Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. We discuss the contribution of climate zones, forest age and seasonality to the comunity structure of plant and Lepidoptera assemblages. The study of these environmental gradients may serve to understand and forecast future changes in species diversity in response to increasing human activities and climate change. This book aims to encourage comprehensive research in the field of community ecology of plants and insects, and will also be of interest to those working in conservation, land use management and climate change in seasonally dry tropical forests.

Bacillus thuringiensis Berliner is a gram-positive, spore forming bacterium that produces proteinaceous crystal containing insecticidal toxins. The pathogenicity of 20 B. thuringiensis isolates, collected from the Western Ghats of Kerala, were evaluated. The tobacco caterpillar, Spodoptera litura Fb. was used as the test insect. Three isolates were found to be toxic to S. litura during preliminary screening. A standardized bioassay carried out with five different concentrations of all the selected isolates and the reference standard HD-1, indicated the equal effectiveness of the native isolates with the standard strain. The lowest LC50 was obtained in KAU-51 and highest in KAU-11. The lowest LT50 was recorded in HD-1.The molecular characterization of the selected isolates was performed with RAPD-PCR technique. Ten primers, which produced more than five bands were selected for RAPD analysis. The RAPD data was used to generate a similarity matrix using the NTSyS programme. The results showed that high variability exists between the selected isolates.

The caterpillar touched my zinc finger

Mechanical wounding and insect feeding induce different transcriptional profiles in plants (Reymond et al. 2000). However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this difference are unclear. By using caterpillars with or without labial salivary secretions, I hope to understand the role of salivary elicitors in plant-insect interactions. Five caterpillar-specific Medicago truncatula genes were previously identified by cDNA-amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis (Darwish et al. 2008). In the present project, temporal transcript profiles of these five genes in response to wounding and Spodoptera exigua caterpillar herbivory were investigated. The expression of the gene encoding a RING zinc finger protein (MtRFP) is significantly reduced 10 h after mechanical wounding or caterpillar herbivory. Herbivory of caterpillars with intact labial salivary secretions significantly decreases the transcription of MtRFP in comparison to mechanical wounding. Our study suggests that labial saliva of S. exigua caterpillars is important for M. truncatula to differentiate between mechanical wounding and insect feeding.

Moreover, it deals with the question 'What makes 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' suitable for a certain age group?' and shows that this picture book also has an educational purpose. The main subject of this paper is the analysis of the relation between words and images in picture books in general and in 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar' as an example of this genre. At the end of this paper there is a conclusion which summarises the most important results of the analysis.

This doctoral thesis is a contribution to the analysis of the combinatorics of arbitrarily coloured open Jacobi diagrams and their relationship to Vassiliev invariants. We examine J.~Kneissler's five ladder relations and state them in a much more precise way. We also analyse their role in the space of colored open Jacobi diagrams. Then, we establish a sort of machinery - a language together with a toolbox of lemmata, theorems and definitions to build, manipulate and analyse coloured open Jacobi diagrams. With this, we examine the role of generalised Pont-Neuf diagrams and caterpillar diagrams. Lastly we transfer this to the uncolored case, which allows us to show that the space of open Jacobi diagrams up to first Betti number five is already contained in the module of caterpillar diagrams, considered as a module of a certain subset of Vogels' algebra. This means that Vassiliev invariants associated to these degrees do not detect knot orientation.

'Defines the challenges facing the movement and offers comprehensive prescriptions for its successful transformation.' -The George Washington Law Review A valuable analysis of the rise, fall, and--hopefully-the revival of unionism in America. [The book] distills into readable form a mass of legal and empirical analysis of what has been happening in the workplaces of the United States and other industrial democracies. Most important, Craver has drawn a blueprint of what must be done to save collective bargaining in this century-must reading for scholars, lawmakers, and, especially, union leaders themselves. -Paul C. Weiler, Harvard Law SchoolAuthor of Governing the Workplace: The Future of Labor and Employment Law 'A thoroughly researched, insightful, and readable look at why American unions have declined. . . . This is a very informative analyis of a vital topic, and it will have a multidisciplinary appeal to anyone interested in union- management relations. -Peter Feuille, Institute of Labor and Industrial Relations, University of IllinoisWhen employees at firms like Greyhound and Eastern Airlines walk out to protest wage and benefit reductions, they are permanently replaced and their representative labor unions destroyed. Every year, the threat or drama of a high-profile strike-in air traffic control towers, at Amtrak, or at Caterpillar-makes national headlines and, every year, several hundred thousand unrepresented American employees are discharged without good cause. During the past decade, employer opposition to unions has increased. Industrial and demographic changes have eroded traditional blue-collar labor support, and class-based myths have discouraged organization among white-collar workers. As the American labor movement begins its second century, it is confronted by challenges that threaten its very existence. Is the decline of the American labor movement symptomatic of a terminal condition? In this work, Charles Craver presents an incisive analysis of the current state of the American labor movement and a manifesto for how this crucial institution can be revitalized. Journeying with the reader from the inception of labor unions through their heyday and to the present, Craver examines the roots of their decline, the current factors which contribute to their dismal condition, and the actions that are needed--such as the recruitment of female and minority employees and appeals to white-collar personnel--that are necessary to ensure union viability in the 21st century. Craver thoughtfully discusses what labor organizations must do to organize new workers, to enhance their economic and political power, and to adapt to modern-day advances and to an increasingly global economy. He also suggests changes that must be made in the National Labor Relations Act. This book is essential reading for lawyers, scholars, and policy-makers, as well as all those concerned with the future of the labor movement.
