Graveyard of the Lakes: Great Lakes Books Serie...

For the first time, a historian and seasoned mariner looks beyond the specific circumstances of individual shipwrecks in an effort to reach a clearer understanding of the economic, political, and psychological factors that have influenced the 25,000 wrecks on the Great Lakes over the past 300 years. Looking at the entire tragic history of shipwrecks on North America's expansive inland seas, from the 1679 loss of the Griffon to the mysterious sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975, Mark L. Thompson concludes that a wreck is not an isolated event. In Graveyard of the Lakes, Thompson suggests that most of the accidents and deaths on the lakes have been the result of human error, ranging from simple mistakes to gross incompetence. In addition to his compelling analysis of the causes of shipwrecks, Thompson includes factual accounts of more than 100 wrecks. Graveyard of the Lakes will forever change the listener's perspective on shipwrecks. The book is published by Wayne State University Press. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Scott MacDonald. Contagion: Health, Fear, Sovereignty: Global Re...

Over many decades, "contagion" has been a metaphor of choice for everything from global terrorism, suicide bombings, poverty, immigration, global financial crises, human rights, fast food, obesity, divorce, and homosexuality. Essays examine the language of epidemiology used in the war on terror, the repressive effects of global disease surveillance, and films and novels that enact the perplexities of contagion in a global context. Fear of microbial disaster becomes a framework for larger questions about the nature and location of sovereignty and the related questions of contact and hygienic isolation, fear and invisibility, the hazards of sociability, the security of surveillance, and what a healthy security might mean. Utilizing the cross-disciplinary approach of global studies, contagion emerges as a vexed trope for globalization itself. Bruce Magnusson is associate professor of politics and the director of global studies and Zahi Zalloua is associate professor of French and general studies, both at Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington. Contributors: Alberto S. Galindo, assistant professor of Spanish, Whitman College Andrew Lakoff, associate professor of anthropology, communications, and sociology at the University of Southern California Christian Moraru, professor of English at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro Paul B. Ice Ages and Interglacials

This book provides a detailed review of terminations of ice ages, including a very attractive theory based on dust deposits on ice sheets. While other books on ice ages are mostly short, popular, and non-technical, the only book that attempts to deal with the broad issues of what we know about past ice ages and why they occur is the book by Muller and MacDonald (M&M), published by Praxis. However, despite its many good features, this book suffers from an inordinate emphasis on spectral analysis, a lack of coverage of new data, and a very confusing sequence of chapters. As a result, the data and theory are so intimately entwined that it is difficult to separate one from the other. This volume provides an independent and comprehensive summary of the latest data, theories and analysis. This third edition of what has become the premier reference and sourcebook on ice ages addresses recent topics, and includes new references, new data, and a totally new, greatly expanded treatment of terminations of ice ages.

Translating Children's Literature
49,00 € *
ggf. zzgl. Versand

Translating children s literature is a very specific field and it's translators are facing many challenges that are not present in adult books translations. However, existing literature on translation attends to the specifics of this subject only marginally. This work attempts to differentiate translating children s literature as a specific area, similar to technical or scientific translations. The theoretical part deals with children s literature as such, its typical features and development, it also presents general translation theory with specific methods and procedures. Afterwards it explores the area of translating children s literature itself, attempting to define specific challenges and to suggest appropriate strategies. The practical part contains the original English text and my Czech translation of two chapters of Mrs. Piggle-Wiggle by Betty MacDonald. The third part, analysis, presents the strategies used, as well as specific translation procedures demonstrated on practical examples. The book is intended not only for the translators of children's literature, but also for the theorists of translation.
