This is a logically self-contained introduction to analysis, suitable for students who have had two years of calculus. The book centers around those properties that have to do with uniform convergence and uniform limits in the context of differentiation and integration. Topics discussed include the classical test for convergence of series, Fourier series, polynomial approximation, the Poisson kernel, the construction of harmonic functions on the disc, ordinary differential equation, curve integrals, derivatives in vector spaces, multiple integrals, and others. In this second edition, the author has added a new chapter on locally integrable vector fields, has rewritten many sections and expanded others. There are new sections on heat kernels in the context of Dirac families and on the completion of normed vector spaces. A proof of the fundamental lemma of Lebesgue integration is included, in addition to many interesting exercises.

The third edition of this well known text continues to provide a solid foundation in mathematical analysis for undergraduate and first-year graduate students. The text begins with a discussion of the real number system as a complete ordered field. (Dedekind´s construction is now treated in an appendix to Chapter I.) The topological background needed for the development of convergence, continuity, differentiation and integration is provided in Chapter 2. There is a new section on the gamma function, and many new and interesting exercises are included. This text is part of the Walter Rudin Student Series in Advanced Mathematics.

Understanding the concepts and methods of real analysis is an essential skill for every undergraduate mathematics student. Written in an easy-to-read style, Real Analysis is a comprehensive introduction to this core subject and is ideal for self-study or as a course textbook for first and second-year undergraduates. Combining an informal style with precision mathematics, Real Analysis covers all the key topics with fully worked examples and exercises with solutions. Featuring: Sequences and series - considering the central notion of a limit.- Continuous functions.- Differentiation.- Integration.- Logarithmic and exponential functions.- Uniform convergence.- Circular functions All these concepts and techniques are deployed in examples in the final chapter to provide the student with a thorough understanding of this challenging subject.

The book provides an introduction to complex analysis for students with some familiarity with complex numbers from high school. The book consists of three parts. The first part comprises the basic core of a course in complex analysis for junior and senior undergraduates. The second part includes various more specialized topics such as the argument principle, the Schwarz lemma and hyperbolic geometry, the Poisson integral, and the Riemann mapping theorem. The third part consists of a selection of topics designed to complete the coverage of all background necessary for passing PhD qualifying exams in complex analysis. Topics selected include Julia sets and the Mandelbrot set, Dirichlet series and the prime number theorem, and the uniformization theorem for Riemann surfaces. The three geometries, spherical, euclidean, and hyperbolic, are stressed. Exercises range from the very simple to the quite challenging, in all chapters. The book is based on lectures given over the years by the author at several places, particularly the Interuniversity Summer School at Perugia (Italy), and also UCLA, Brown University, Valencia (Spain), and La Plata (Argentina). A native of Minnesota, the author did his undergraduate work at Yale University and his graduate work at UC Berkeley. After spending some time at MIT and at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), he joined the faculty at UCLA in 1968.

This book is first of all designed as a text for the course usually called ´´theory of functions of a real variable´´. This course is at present cus tomarily offered as a first or second year graduate course in United States universities, although there are signs that this sort of analysis will soon penetrate upper division undergraduate curricula. We have included every topic that we think essential for the training of analysts, and we have also gone down a number of interesting bypaths. We hope too that the book will be useful as a reference for mature mathematicians and other scientific workers. Hence we have presented very general and complete versions of a number of important theorems and constructions. Since these sophisticated versions may be difficult for the beginner, we have given elementary avatars of all important theorems, with appro priate suggestions for skipping. We have given complete definitions, ex planations, and proofs throughout, so that the book should be usable for individual study as well as for a course text. Prerequisites for reading the book are the following. The reader is assumed to know elementary analysis as the subject is set forth, for example, in ToM M. APOSTOL´s Mathematical Analysis [Addison-Wesley Publ. Co., Reading, Mass., 1957], orWALTERRUDIN´s Principles of Mathe matical Analysis [2nd Ed., McGraw-Hill Book Co., New York, 1964].

This textbook is intended for a one semester course in complex analysis for upper level undergraduates in mathematics. Applications, primary motivations for this text, are presented hand-in-hand with theory enabling this text to serve well in courses for students in engineering or applied sciences. The overall aim in designing this text is to accommodate students of different mathematical backgrounds and to achieve a balance between presentations of rigorous mathematical proofs and applications. The text is adapted to enable maximum flexibility to instructors and to students who may also choose to progress through the material outside of coursework. Detailed examples may be covered in one course, giving the instructor the option to choose those that are best suited for discussion. Examples showcase a variety of problems with completely worked out solutions, assisting students in working through the exercises. The numerous exercises vary in difficulty from simple applications of formulas to more advanced project-type problems. Detailed hints accompany the more challenging problems. Multi-part exercises may be assigned to individual students, to groups as projects, or serve as further illustrations for the instructor. Widely used graphics clarify both concrete and abstract concepts, helping students visualize the proofs of many results. Freely accessible solutions to every-other-odd exercise are posted to the book´s Springer website. Additional solutions for instructors´ use may be obtained by contacting the authors directly.

This is the fourth edition of Serge Lang´s Complex Analysis. The first part of the book covers the basic material of complex analysis, and the second covers many special topics, such as the Riemann Mapping Theorem, the gamma function, and analytic continuation. Power series methods are used more systematically than in other texts, and the proofs using these methods often shed more light on the results than the standard proofs do. The first part of Complex Analysis is suitable for an introductory course on the undergraduate level, and the additional topics covered in the second part give the instructor of a graduate course a great deal of flexibility in structuring a more advanced course. This is a revised edition, new examples and exercises have been added, and many minor improvements have been made throughout the text.

This new edition is intended for third and fourth year undergraduates in Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, and the Applied Sciences, and can serve as a springboard for further work in Continuum Mechanics or General Relativity. Starting from a basic knowledge of calculus and matrix algebra, together with fundamental ideas from mechanics and geometry, the text gradually develops the tools for formulating and manipulating the field equations of Continuum Mechanics. The mathematics of tensor analysis is introduced in well-separated stages: the concept of a tensor as an operator; the representation of a tensor in terms of its Cartesian components; the components of a tensor relative to a general basis, tensor notation, and finally, tensor calculus. The physical interpretation and application of vectors and tensors are stressed throughout. Though concise, the text is written in an informal, non-intimidating style enhanced by worked-out problems and a meaningful variety of exercises. The new edition includes more exercises, especially at the end of chapter IV. Furthermore, the author has appended a section on Differential Geometry, the essential mathematical tool in the study of the 2-dimensional structural shells and 4-dimensional general relativity.
